When same-day is NOT the right choice
Some cases benefit from a dental lab and a longer turnaround: complex aesthetic cases involving multiple front teeth, multi-unit bridges spanning the front of the mouth, certain implant abutment cases, and patients who prefer the aesthetic options that highly-skilled lab technicians provide. Your dentist will discuss whether same-day or lab-fabricated is the right choice.
What your crown is made of
Our same-day crowns are milled from solid blocks of dental ceramic — typically lithium disilicate (such as e.max) for molars and zirconia-based ceramics for cases where extra strength is needed. Both materials are well-studied for dental use, biocompatible, and color-matched to your existing teeth. Crown longevity depends on individual wear, oral hygiene, and bite forces.

When a tooth breaks — especially a front tooth — most patients want it fixed today, not in three weeks. For many fractures we can prepare the tooth, scan it, mill a crown, and bond it in the same visit.

Same-day crowns are priced in line with the Ontario Dental Association Suggested Fee Guide. Most extended health insurance plans cover crowns (typically 50% with annual or lifetime maximums); CDCP covers some restorative work for eligible patients. We accept direct billing.

You can eat and drink normally as soon as the numbing wears off (usually 2–3 hours). Some mild sensitivity in the first few days is normal. Brush and floss as usual. Avoid biting on very hard items. If anything feels off — high bite, sensitivity that doesn't resolve — call us; we adjust same-day.

A same-day crown is a dental crown that's designed, milled, and bonded into your mouth all in a single appointment, usually 90–120 minutes. Instead of taking a physical impression and sending it to a dental lab (which takes 2–3 weeks and requires a temporary crown in between), we use a digital intraoral scanner, design the crown on a computer at chairside, and mill the crown from a solid block of ceramic in our office. You walk out with the finished restoration the same day.
Are same-day crowns as strong as lab-made crowns?
For most cases, yes. The ceramic materials used for same-day milling (lithium disilicate or zirconia-based ceramics) are well-studied and biocompatible, with strength comparable to lab-fabricated all-ceramic crowns. For some highly aesthetic front-tooth cases or multi-unit bridges, a skilled dental lab technician may produce a slightly more individualized result — your dentist will discuss whether same-day or lab is the right choice.
Will my crown look natural?
We select the ceramic shade to match your neighboring teeth and refine the crown's shape and surface texture during design. For molars and premolars, most patients are very satisfied with the same-day result. For visible front teeth where individual character matters, your dentist may recommend a lab-fabricated crown for the most personalized aesthetic.
Will my insurance cover it?
Most extended health insurance plans cover crowns at typically 50%, up to your annual or lifetime maximum. We submit a pre-treatment estimate to your insurer. CDCP covers some restorative work for eligible patients — we bill the program directly.
What if I'm in pain right now and need a crown?
Call us. For broken teeth, lost crowns, or sharp edges causing pain, we reserve same-day appointment slots. We can often complete the crown the same day — including pain management, sedation if needed, and the full procedure.
Can same-day crowns be used on front teeth?
For many front-tooth cases, yes — especially for chipped or broken teeth that need same-day repair. For highly aesthetic cases where the appearance of a single front tooth matters greatly, your dentist may recommend a lab-fabricated alternative for the best individualized result.
How long will my same-day crown last?
Crown longevity depends on individual factors — oral hygiene, bite forces, habits like grinding, and the position of the tooth. Many crowns last 10–15 years or more with proper care. We review aftercare with you before you leave and follow up at your regular check-ups.
